Dyscyplina naukowa:
nauki biologiczne, nauki o Ziemi i środowisku
Zainteresowania badawcze:
Badania prowadzę w środowiskach wodnych (j. mazurskie, M. Bałtyckie), środowiskach granicznych (maty mikrobialne) i lądowych (biologiczne skorupy glebowe) (pustynie Pamir Wsch., Kalifornia Pd.). Interesuje mnie ewolucja, filogeneza, taksonomia, biogeografia oraz toksyczność sinic i przyczyny zakwitów sinicowych. Badam też inwazyjne, toksyczne gatunki eukariotycznego fitoplanktonu, np. Prymnesium parvum, odpowiedzialnego za katastrofę ekologiczną w Odrze oraz jego występowanie w Bałtyku. Stosuję metody mikroskopowe, izolację i hodowlę, klasyczne analizy genetyczne, analizy metagenomu środowiskowego oraz genomów poszukując nowych gatunków i przystosowań do warunków ekstremalnych.
description of research interests:
My interests include the occurrence, ecophysiology, and diversity of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae in various environments, including extreme ones. I am interested in picocyanobacteria, dominant in the oceans, "large" planktonic and benthic cyanobacteria that form blooms and microbial mats, and invasive species. I conduct research in aquatic environments (Masurian Lakes, Baltic Sea), borderline environments (microbial mats), and terrestrial environments (biological soil crusts) (deserts of the Eastern Pamir, Southern California). I am interested in the evolution, phylogeny, taxonomy, biogeography, and toxicity of cyanobacteria and the causes of cyanobacterial blooms. I also study invasive, toxic species of eukaryotic phytoplankton, such as Prymnesium parvum, responsible for the ecological disaster in the Oder River, and its occurrence in the Baltic Sea. I use microscopic methods, isolation and cultivation, classical genetic analyses, environmental metagenome analyses and genome analyses to search for new species and adaptations to extreme conditions.
Realizowane projekty:
„Różnorodność toksycznych i nietoksycznych szczepów cyjanobakterii w … w ekstremalnych środowiskach – podejście metagenomowe”. Obecnie w ramach projektu prowadzimy badania metagenomu środowiskowego i adaptacji poszczególnych genomów do warunków ekstremalnych. “Insight into the diversity, physiology and toxicity of Prymnesium parvum – interdisciplinary approach” – w tym konsorcyjnym projekcie badam występowanie P. parvum w Odrze i Wiśle, prowadzę charakterystykę ekofizjologiczną nowo wyizolowanych toksycznych szczepów P. parvum, aby oszacować niebezpieczeństwo zakwitów. “Assessment of the effect of the expanding Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax and Prymnesium parvum on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea” https://oceanandsociety.org/en/projects/habbal-2">https://oceanandsociety.org/en/projects/habbal-2">https://oceanandsociet.... W tym międzynarodowym projekcie prowadzę badania wpływu inwazyjnych P. parvum oraz A. pseudogonyaulax na mikrobiom prokaryotyczny i występowanie toksycznych zakwitów sinicowych w Bałtyku
research projects implemented:
"Diversity of toxic and non-toxic cyanobacterial strains in... extreme environments – a metagenomic approach." Currently, in the project, we are examining the environmental metagenome and the adaptation of individual genomes to extreme conditions. "Insight into the diversity, physiology, and toxicity of Prymnesium parvum – an interdisciplinary approach." In this consortium project, I am investigating the occurrence of P. parvum in the Oder and Vistula Rivers and conducting ecophysiological characterization of newly isolated toxic P. parvum strains to assess the risk of blooms. "Assessment of the effect of the expanding Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax and Prymnesium parvum on biodiversity in the Baltic Sea" https://oceanandsociety.org/en/projects/habbal-2. In this international project, I am researching the impact of invasive P. parvum and A. pseudogonyaulax on the prokaryotic microbiome and the occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea.
