Piotr Achinger zajmuje się geometrią algebraiczną i arytmetyczną, ze szczególnym naciskiem na topologię i teorię homotopii rozmaitości algebraicznych oraz na geometrię algebraiczną w dodatniej charakterystyce.

Geometria algebraiczna bada zbiory rozwiązań układów wielomianowych, zwane rozmaitościami algebraicznymi. Klasyczna teoria skupia się na rozmaitościach nad ciałem liczb zespolonych, jednak z punktu widzenia teorii liczb i arytmetyki, najważniejsze są rozmaitości nad ciałem liczb wymiernych oraz nad ciałami skończonymi. Geometria algebraiczna ma bliskie związki z jednej strony z teorią liczb, a z drugiej strony z fizyką matematyczną. Fakt, że współczesna geometria algebraiczna dostarcza jednorodnego języka w którym można mówić o tak różnorodnych problemach spowodował dość zaskakujący przepływ idei pomiędzy tymi pozornie niezwiązanymi dziedzinami.

Piotr Achinger works in arithmetic and algebraic geometry, with special focus on the topology and homotopy theory of algebraic varieties and on varieties in positive characteristic.

Algebraic geometry studies sets of solutions of systems of polynomial equations, called algebraic varieties. The classical theory focuses on varieties over the complex numbers, but from the point of view of number theory, it is the fields of rational numbers and finite fields which are of key importance. Algebraic Geometry has close connections to number theory on one hand, and with mathematical physics on the other. The fact that modern algebraic geometry provides a uniform language in which one can talk about such a variety of problems caused a quite remarkable flux of ideas between ostensibly unrelated areas.
